During the course of repairing my old computers, there's routinely tools that are required to get the job done. Rather than send people on a wild goose chase looking for whacky capers on the internet, here's a selection of things I've used to save my tuchus in recent memory.
Bo Zimmerman's Commodore PC software archives
A collection of images for a variety of Commodore PCs. Used
recently in the repair process for my Commodore
PC40-III.
WinWorld
Images of nearly every version of MS-DOS, Windows, OS/2 etc you
could need to resurrect something from the 90s.
DiskWrite
If you try find something to write the floppy images from Zimmers
or WinWorld, you'll need the right tool - WinImage pops up often
but it sucks at writing reliably. DiskWrite on the other
hand just gets it done.
OnTrack Disk Manager
Got something antique that doesn't play nice with your newer,
bigger hard disk? OnTrack is the classic tool to work around
this, although there are exceptions - the Compaq for example
can't use OnTrack as it prevents the ability to access the BIOS!
It has worked successfully on the PC40 though.
Strife v1.31 freelook hack
Wanting to play the legendary Rogue Entertainment game Strife but
can't handle looking with PgUp/PgDn? Grab this handy wee hack,
make your life about 35% less annoying!
Nonsense
wallpapers
Allegedly some folks wanted some of the nonsense wallpapers I use
on my computers on-stream. Well if you really want one of those
you can get them I guess?
